Black and White

Black and white photography may seem like the simplest concept in the world when applied to the digital medium, but that's not true. It is simple in the execution-you take a photo, desaturate it, and voila! black and white-but in the delivery there are difficulties. Many digital photos do not look good in black and white. Photos taken with black and white film generally look good given the composition, but for some reason, some digital photos fight it. The coloring may be too similar so some of the information is lost in translation. The contrast may suffer. Textures may lose their impact. Whatever it is, you have to carefully select which photos will be desaturated. The easiest way to do this is turn a bunch black and white and choose the best. That part is based on the eye of the beholder. Photography is one of those wonderful subjective arts based on who likes what the best. I will not rant on such things at this time for the sake of my readers, but believe me when I say the subjective aspect of art is one of its worst qualities, though it is impossible to change.
